Juvenile Justice

The juvenile justice system plays a critical role in protecting communities, supporting youth, and ensuring fair and consistent court processes. This section provides access to statutes, rules, and national organizations that support best practices in juvenile justice. It also offers resources for parents, practitioners, and youth.

What you might expect in a juvenile case

The steps below are a general overview. Not every case includes every step.

A concern may be reported to law enforcement, juvenile probation, a school, or another agency. Some situations can be handled informally without filing a court case.

If a case is filed, the court issues paperwork that explains the allegation(s), hearing date(s), and the youth’s rights.

In some situations, a youth may be held in secure detention for safety or legal reasons. Many cases proceed with the youth at home or in a community placement.

The court reviews the allegation(s), confirms the youth understands their rights, and addresses immediate needs (safety planning, school, living situation, and services).

The youth may admit the allegation(s) or deny them and request a hearing. The court will determine what happens next.

The court and local partners may request screening/assessment to understand needs (behavioral health, substance use, school supports, family needs) and to guide recommendations.

If the court finds the youth comes under juvenile court authority, the court may order a plan that can include supervision, treatment, restitution, community service, school requirements, and other supports.

The court may hold review hearings to monitor progress, adjust services, and support accountability.

Cases typically end when court-ordered requirements are completed. Some families may have questions about records – if that applies to you, ask your attorney or local court staff for guidance.
